For Referrers

Important Notice for Referrers: Cessation of Private Obstetrics Services – Effective 1 July 2025

Due to the closure of the maternity unit at St John of God Hospital Bunbury and a steady decline in private obstetrics, South West O & G will no longer be offering private obstetric indemnity cover from 1 July 2025.

We will continue to accept referrals for:

  • Early pregnancy support for high-risk, privately insured antenatal patients
(All antenatal referrals must be discussed with our midwife prior to sending to ensure they meet our high-risk criteria.)

High-risk private antenatal patients will transition into public hospital care at approximately 20 weeks gestation, to allow a smooth handover and continuity with the public system.

Our gynaecology and fertility services remain fully operational and unaffected by this change.

All referrals are checked by our Specialists to ensure urgent cases are seen promptly.

They are triaged based on the information you supply and an appointment is sent out accordingly.

Please include all relevant test results to ensure your patient receives a timely appointment. This generally comprises:

    • The most recent CST (and CST history if relevant)

    • Pelvic ultrasound

    • Relevant bloods

If the condition is urgent, please indicate this on the referral and give as much information as possible.

If it is an emergency, please contact the Bunbury Regional Hospital O&G registrar on-call via switchboard on 9722 1000. There is always a consultant O&G on call whom they can liaise with.
